About Us
The Santa Cruz AIDS Project (SCAP) serves men, women and children who are HIV positive living in Santa Cruz County. Our mission is to promote and participate in a comprehensive and compassionate response to HIV and AIDS through education, advocacy, and supportive services. All care services are free, confidential and offered within a non-judgmental environment. Care services include case management, access to medical care, financial assistance, food bank, volunteer support, support groups, and pro bono professional support services.
SCAP is a welcoming place. We celebrate and value each person entering our doors for services regardless of age, race, culture, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, lifestyle, background, religion, ability, or income.
Mission Statement
The Santa Cruz AIDS Project was founded in 1985 by a group of dedicated volunteers with the mission to lead a community response to the ever-changing HIV/AIDS pandemic, to enhance the quality of life through powerful support programs, to advocate effectively for the health and dignity of those living with HIV, and to reduce the spreads of HIV through results-oriented and measured education and prevention programs that are tailored to specific at-risk community groups and focused on the health of Santa Cruz County.
About the Ride
The Surf City AIDS Ride is a community event designed to raise funds to support the mission and work of the Santa Cruz AIDS Project. We cycle to bring in the money. We cycle to bring out the community. We cycle to bring on the fun!
If you rode or volunteered last year -- or any other of the prior seven years while called The Surf City Century... The Santa Cruz AIDS Project (SCAP) THANKS YOU!!
Last year's ride was a success, and we are so grateful for your support.
The Surf City AIDS Ride is an amazing opportunity to challenge yourself on one of three fully supported cycling routes: 30, 60, or 100 miles.
The ride takes its riders from country roads to ocean views, through strawberry fields and rows and rows of artichokes, and plenty more in between! The local flavor attached to this ride brings a spirit of good times for those who participate to benefit this very good cause. It is also a great way to meet active people and raise money for a very hard working local charity.
SCAP has gone through considerable changes over the past year. And... the commitment is stronger than ever to bring you a quality cycling event that is well organized and of course fun! There are many improvements to the ride this year including:
- All three routes have been reworked! We listened to cyclists' suggestions and have made exciting changes, like the first pit stop. AT THE BEACH!!!
- The starting point and finish line for Surf City will be based at San Lorenzo Park in downtown Santa Cruz
- A motorcycle safety crew will be on hand to help keep you safe
- An event t-shirt is included with every registration
- A delicious hot catered lunch will be provided to all 60 and 100 mile cyclists
- A further commitment to recycling and reducing waste
- Live entertainment on the route and at the Start/Finish
- And the list goes on!
As you can imagine, the recent cut-backs tied to balancing California's state budget have devastated organizations like SCAP. This will have a set of immediate, horrifying consequences for the clients who depend on us every day. As such, it is all the more vital that The Surf City AIDS Ride be a great success this year. Please consider joining us again this October, and telling your friends interested in cycling and ending the suffering caused by HIV/AIDS.
Thanks so much for your support of The Santa Cruz AIDS Project. Hope to see you on October 3rd, out on one of our routes!
